Mark Duggan, a 29-year-old black man, was shot on 4 August 2011 by police in Tottenham, North East London, England. Duggan died from a gunshot wound to the chest, shot by police in a series of events described by conflicting eyewitness reports. The anger of some over the circumstances of Duggan's death, a public demonstration protesting his shooting, and the beating of a 16-year old girl by police were all contributory factors to a riot in Tottenham, which escalated into widespread riots, looting and arson in London and elsewhere.

Katharine Birbalsingh, a teacher been teaching in inner London for over a decade and plans to set up a Free School in London to help to serve underprivileged children, says “Some of the black kids I used to teach will tell you that the riots are absolutely justified. A number of adults would agree with them. Everywhere I read that the protest was understandable because "PEOPLE ARE VERY ANGRY".

A friend of Duggan who gave her name as Niki, 53, said marchers had wanted "justice for the family" and "something had to be done". She said some of them lay in the road to make their point. "They're making their presence known because people are not happy. This guy was not violent. Yes, he was involved in things but he was not an aggressive person. He had never hurt anyone." Katherine added

A Londoner when asked by a television reporter: Is rioting the correct way to express your discontent?

"Yes," said the young man. "You wouldn't be talking to me now if we didn't riot, would you?"

The TV reporter from Britain's ITV had no response. So the young man pressed his advantage. "Two months ago we marched to Scotland Yard, more than 2,000 of us, all blacks, and it was peaceful and calm and you know what? Not a word in the press. Last night a bit of rioting and looting and look around you"

Police and local leaders in Tottenham made real progress in improving community relations in the intervening years and that's true about all of Britain. The best way to prevent crime, the theory goes, is to improve the lot of the people, then they won't need to commit crimes. But caught in a poverty and joblessness cycle, young people in many British urban areas have little hope of a better life.

So when a local 29-year-old father, described by police as a gangster, was shot dead by an officer, the response came quickly.

However, the investigation into the death of Mark Duggan has found no forensic evidence that he was carrying a gun when he was shot dead by police on 4 August, the Guardian has learned.

The protest started quiet peacefully, there was about 150 people outside the police station and were out there, they were quiet patient all what they wanted was a few answers; answers what’s happening! The police completely ignored them!

A young 16 years old approximately, went to approach them just again to find roughly what’s going on and they just took some offensive action by pushing her .. and that’s when the people started to retaliate ! … The police seems to have this contemnor people. And I don’t think they necessarily needed to have kill the guy. They had apprehended him, there was in control, there was no need to kill him, there was absolutely not. So basically, they might be surprised that this happen!! .. You cannot keep on oppressing people!

Brixton uprising!

The story began in 1981 after a confrontation between the Metropolitan Police and protesters in Lambeth, South London, England, between 10 and 12 April 1981. The main riot on 11 April, dubbed "Bloody Saturday" by TIME magazine, resulted in almost 280 injuries to police and 45 injuries to members of the public; over a hundred vehicles were burned, including 56 police vehicles; and almost 150 buildings were damaged, with thirty burned. There were 82 arrests. Reports suggested that up to 5,000 people were involved

Brixton in South London was an area with serious social and economic problems. The whole United 

Kingdom was affected by a recession by 1981, but the local African-Caribbean community was suffering particularly high unemployment, poor housing, and a higher than average crime rate. 

After 4 years Brixton witnessed a second uprising was sparked by the shooting of Dorothy 'Cherry' Groce by police, while they sought her son Michael Groce in relation to a suspected firearms offence; they believed Michael Groce was hiding in his mother's home. It is reported that the police did not give the required warning (which alerts residents to the fact that a raid is about to proceed), and Mrs. Groce was in bed when the police began their search. Michael Groce was not there at the time of the shooting, and Mrs. Groce was paralysed below the waist by the police bullet. Mrs. Groce had migrated to Britain from Jamaica in her youth, and the incident was immediately perceived by many local residents as further evidence of what was widely regarded as institutional racism in the Metropolitan Police.

As word of the shooting spread through the community, rumours persisted that Mrs. Groce had in fact been killed in the shooting, and a large group of protesters gathered at the local police station chanting anti-police slogans and demanding disciplinary action against the officers involved. However, hostility between the largely black crowd and the largely white police force quickly escalated into a series of street battles. The police lost control of the area for approximately 48 hours during which several shops were looted and fires started, leaving at least one building and dozens of cars destroyed. One photo-journalist, David Hodge, died a few days later as a result of head injuries he received from a gang of looters whom he was trying to photograph and dozens of arrests were made.

On May 11, 2012 Elliot Abrams as usual wrote negatively about Bahrain following the same media propaganada of the shia majority repressed by the sunni monarchy which becomes to be discusting to Bahrainis and expats living in harmony for decades just because the US and Imperialists are not happy anymore with ruling regmis in the Middle East. 

 

I chose two comments on the Article "Missing in Bahrain: Leadership" from Mr.Nabeel and Mrs, Reem Mohammed which I consider them as lessons to Abrams, he might learn from them when he thinks to write about Bahrain again!

You based your entire article on, I heard, I was told, I read. I can only say one thing to you, I LIVE.

Yes, I live in Bahrain, I see, I feel, I witness. All of that give me a bull’s eye perspective on the events in Bahrain and it is a really simple conclusion. What we have here is pure terrorism made by Iranians or Iranian operatives. This is the very same terror the West has long fought against.

So far, Bahraini Sunnis have exhibited the utmost self-restraints against daily terror attacks in an attempt to avoid bloodshed, but the Shia’s are determined to take us down that path.

Shia’s have forgone all peaceful initiatives and dialogues, for them anything short of holding power is not acceptable and will be considered as a defeat. For the Sunni’s and our surrounding countries this is not an option, never was and never will be.

Yes, they have always been given posts in the government and a representation of about half of the parliament and had a say in decision making – granted not as much as they liked, but we lived in peace and harmony with them. Things changed and by their own ill-conceived deeds. Now they are the enemy.

If you really believe that the Iranian influence is only mere inflammatory broadcasts, then I have an ocean front property in Phoenix I would like to sell to you at rock-bottom price. Please don’t be so gullible as to believe the Iranian innocence as the so the called Bahraini opposition would like you to believe. If you buy into that, then you actually believe they are not meddling in Iraq or Syria, Lebanon, Afghanistan, Kuwait, Yemen and the list go on.

You don’t see God, but that does not stop you from believing God’s existence, in the same token, you may not see the Iranian evil from the safety of DC, but it thrives in Bahrain, so believe in it. Bahrain stands today as the last gateway between the expansion and the exportation of the Iranian revolution and the Arab way of life – the choice are yours. Actually, the choice is ours.

 Let me bring in a different prospective on this Mr Elliot as a business consultant in Bahrain which might disappoint you. Every week I have new clients including locals Bahrainis that visit my office to establish new businesses and enterprises.

 

My last visit was from a young Bahraini lady – if it makes a huge difference to you, she is shia (however that does not matter to me however it seems to matter to you and the mass media propaganda) who just established a new business and was pleased that her business was thriving and is in the process of establishing another branch of her business elsewhere in the Kingdom.
Before I go on and despite as per your constant updates of new reports of protests and police “abuses” most of which are reported however without evidence by a rights group that are also politically involved and therefore bias , as well as media mostly again run by opposition individual figures or their wives, what you fail to comprehend is a fact that this is not as you put it a “gap between the Sunni royal family and the mostly Shia population is by all accounts widening” but a gap that a radical opposition would like you to believe.

As per the accounts of this young Bahraini lady again I will re-affirm is a shia (as it is always important to you to highlight the sunni /shia rhetoric) one of the first topics she started with prior to business was the fact that she and many were tired of the radical youths that terrorize their villages and homes every day and also wished the law would be enforced so they could get about their daily lives without having to hide in their homes. Her and many villagers have had enough of the constant violence that they also object to. I would suggest Mr Elliot that you come down on the ground and let me introduce you to her and many others like her that also disagree with your shia/sunni sentiment.

Regarding the “democracy” statement. Please explain how democracy will change my life?
 

Will by having “democracy” mean I will be entitled to live in a palace? Will “democracy” provide me with a job? Will “democracy” solve my housing problems? Democracy certainly hasn’t solved yours.
 

There are over forty millions jobless in USA with ten millions homeless and the lucky is the one who lives in tent city. There is no health insurance and no security for any American without paying life time endless health insurance policies for the same corporate that destroyed their economy. At same time their government has been looting their future and spent trillions on endless adventures against Arabs- John Churchilly
 

Democracy is a word frequently used in Western politics. We are constantly told that you live in a democracy and that your political system is “democratic” and that nations that do not match these standards are classed as “undemocratic”. D Robertson, writing in 1986, stated that:
 

“Democracy is the most valued and also the vaguest of political terms in the modern world”
 

Robertson continued by stating that the word only starts to mean something tangible in the modern world when it is prefixed with other political words, such as direct, representative, liberal and parliamentary.
 

When you speak about “democracy” you fail to provide the public with a full insight into the meaning of your “democratic” process.
 

There is no such thing as a real democracy, it doesn’t exist.
The only real democracy is a direct democracy which no country in the western world can boast they have to date after thousands of years.
 

So what you speak about when you refer to “democracy” is a “Representative Democracy” like the UK as an example where you elect an MP who is supposedly supposed to represent you, yet once elected you don’t really get any representation at all.
 

Basically, the people hand over the responsibility of decision making to someone else who wishes to be in that position and they are held accountable to them. If they fail to perform (or if the party has done badly during its time in office) they can be removed by the people of their constituency. In this way, the people exercise control over their representatives.
 

However, by handing to their MP’s the right to participate in decision making within the Commons, the electorate is removing itself from the process of decision making…. So much for the democratic process…
 

For the point that you make regarding having spoken to Bahrainis who acknowledge these divisions, it’s about time you come and speak to Bahrainis like me.
 

And another point, the centre will always hold, at the end of the day what you fail to understand is the fact that regardless of how you look at things there are many Bahrainis that have both shia and sunni- as you always like to reference- within their family nucleus.
 

When you have a chance to sit with ordinary people in Bahrain, you will notice that the Bahrainis that you have sat and spoken with are the ones politically and selfishly motivated for personal gain.
Now I am neither pro nor antigovernment, but what I am is pro truth, and that is the truth.
 

Years ago Mr Elliot, the imperialists spoke about “Civilisation” and how important it was to “export” civilization, today you speak about “democracy” and are in the process of “exporting” a “democracy”.
This is what your “civilization” did to a great nation.

A few years later, with “civilization” came beggars, thieves and the wealth was gone.
Hope I am making a clear point. It is a little like your democracy that you insist on, yet fail to show what democracy will reap the citizens of this nation besides voting.
 

For your point on violence and alienation, this must come from people like you to speak about the truth of what you wish to export to our nation that is a failure in yours.
 

What went wrong? You ask.. What went wrong was a western promise to radicals to assist with a coup without taking into account a vast majority that you fail to hear the voices of even today.

You must remember that during February and March of last year, the US administration – According to the BICI report (that you and the mass media like to constantly refer to however not on all the points)- and the opposition was in the process of forming an interim government without democratically conferring with the rest of the population , now that in itself caused an uproar and a 

widening mistrust and gap in society. That on its own damaged the trust.
 

I personally believe that the real underlying problem is simple to understand: the people ruling the western so called “democracies” do not wish to lose power and fear that moves to Arab independency will leave them out of a “loop” and no longer in power dictating to the Arab and the rest of the world as they have done for centuries.
 

What is to be done? Well Mr Elliot, in my opinion, ask the west to stop interfering in the Middle East and elsewhere, they have been doing so for centuries. Is it hopeless? Yes it is because the West just can’t manage that.

Among its founders were Bob Bernstein, CEO of Random House publishers; Aryeh Neier, the current President of the Open Society Institute, a former Executive Director of the American Civil Liberties Union, and a co-founder of Students for a Democratic Society in 1959; Orville Schell, Dean of the University of California at Berkley graduate school of journalism and a leftwing journalist; and Jeri Laber, a writer and political activist. In the 1980s, the organization developed a number of “Watch” committees, including Americas Watch, Asia Watch, and Africa Watch, which ultimately united under the umbrella of the U.S.-based HRW in 1988. Today HRW states that its “principle advocacy strategy is to shame offenders by generating press attention and to exert diplomatic and economic pressure on them by enlisting influential governments and institutions” on a wide array of issues.

HRW mission is dedicated to protecting the human rights of people around the world. Did HRW really protect the human rights of people around the world?!

Human rights are part of the American value system, but they are also especially useful as an 'ideology of justification' in wartime. Such an ideology should ideally meet some criteria. First, it should not be a simple appeal to self-interest. Simply stating "We own the world!" or "We are the master race, submit to us!" is not good propaganda. As a slogan, 'war on terrorism' is also inadequate, since it is too clearly an American war, against the enemies of America. For propaganda purposes, an appeal to higher values is preferable.

Second, these higher values should be universal. The doctrine of universal human rights is, by definition, universal and cross-cultural.

Third, the ideology should appeal to the population of the super-power. In the United States, for historical reasons, 'rights doctrines' have become part of its political culture. It would be pointless for a US President to justify a war by appealing to Islam, or royal legitimacy, because very few Americans hold these beliefs. Most Americans do believe in rights theories - and very few know that these theories are disputed.

Fourth, if possible, the ideology should appeal to the 'enemy' population. It should ideally be part of their values. That is difficult, but the doctrine of human rights has succeeded in acquiring cross-cultural legitimacy

Human rights are not the only ideology of intervention. The 'civilising mission', which justified 19-th century colonisation, is another example.The point is that human rights can serve a geopolitical purpose, which is unrelated to their moral content.

Universal human rights, by their nature, tend to justify military intervention to enforce those rights. Expansionists, rather than isolationists, are closest to the spirit of the American Constitution, with its inherently interventionist values. In fact, most US-Americans believe in the universality and superiority of their ethical tradition. Interventionist human-rights organisations are, like the neoconservative warmongers, a logical result. Human Rights Watch is not formally an 'association for the promotion of the American Way of Life' - but it tends to behave like one

Human Rights Watch operates a number of discriminatory exclusions, to maintain its American character, and that in turn reduces internal criticism of its limited perspective. Although it publishes material in foreign languages to promote its views, the organisation itself is English-only. More seriously, HRW discriminates on grounds of nationality. Non-Americans are systematically excluded at board level - unless they have emigrated to the United States. HRW also recruits its employees in the United States, in English. The backgrounds of the Committee members (below) indicate that HRW recruits it decision-makers from the upper class, and upper-middle class. Look at their professions: there are none from middle-income occupations, let alone any poor illegal immigrants, or Somali peasants.

Under the Reagan administration, U.S. policy toward Nicaragua's Sandinista government was marked by constant hostility. This hostility yielded, among other things, an inordinate amount of publicity about human rights issues. Almost invariably, U.S. pronouncements on human rights exaggerated and distorted the real human rights violations of the Sandinista regime, and exculpated those of the U.S.-supported insurgents, known as the contras. In 1989, under the Bush administration, U.S. policy toward Nicaragua has experienced one major change, in that it appears that the contras have ceased to be regarded as a viable military and political option.

In an instructive article dealing with human rights abuses in China, Ralph McGehee (1999) draws attention to the links between HRW's Asia branch and the imperial ambitions of the NED and the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). He notes that: "US corporate-owned media, in league with government agencies, orchestrate media coverage to demonize states in conflict with corporate plans". He observed that in China's case many of those stories "seem to be generated by the 'privately funded' 

US-based Human Rights Watch/Asia" and that this:

 "...reveals the current US policy of using (rightly or wrongly) the theme of human rights violations to alter or overthrow non-US-favored governments. In those countries emerging from the once Soviet Bloc that is forming new governmental systems; or where emerging or Third World governments resist US influence or control, the US uses 'human rights violations,' as an excuse for political action operations. 'Human Rights' replaces 'Communist Conspiracy' as the justification for overthrowing governments."

In a similar vein, Sara Flounders (2002) illustrates how HRW provided the global media with information that enabled them to claim that in the West Bank "no massacre had taken place in Jenin" when in fact much other evidence suggested that a massacre had taken place.[4] She notes how HRW claims that "its reports are objective, balanced and evenhanded", however:

"When it comes to Palestine this has meant equating the violence of the illegal Israeli occupation with the resistance of Palestinians to overwhelming military force. Once Human Rights Watch declared that 'no massacre' had occurred in Jenin, the demand for an inquiry and international action against Israeli crimes virtually disappeared. Media coverage shifted sharply. The Bush administration made a new round of demands on the Palestinians to condemn violence while calling Ariel Sharon 'a man of peace' and expressing sympathy for Israeli 'self-defense' measures. HRW statements echoed these shifts." 

HRW or the under covered CIA agent used the rhetoric of human rights and democracy and Beating the drums of war against Saddam Husain regime! 

In 1995 HRW reported:

Since the Arab Ba'ath Socialist Party came to power in 1968, the Iraqi government has used terror through various levels of police, military and intelligence agencies to control and intimidate Iraqis. Two decades of oppression against Iraq's Kurds culminated in 1988 with a campaign of genocide, including the use of chemical weapons attacks, against Kurdish civilians. The Ba'athist Sunni Muslim minority has repressed the Shi'a population, including the Marsh Arabs in the south.  After the Gulf War, the use of state terror to control the population intensified. For example, thousands of Marsh Arabs have fled to Iran because Iraq has drained the marsh regions and sent in the military with tanks to shell and burn villages. Given the history of a fundamental lack of respect of human rights in Iraq, Human Rights Watch/Middle East is concerned about both the severity of the decrees and the number of people victimized by them.

In February, 2003 G.W Bush made a speech at the American Enterprise Institute said: 

We meet here during a crucial period in the history of our nation, and of the civilized world. Part of that history was written by others; the rest will be written by us. On a September morning, threats that had gathered for years, in secret and far away, led to murder in our country on a massive scale. As a result, we must look at security in a new way, because our country is a battlefield in the first war of the 21st century.

We learned a lesson: The dangers of our time must be confronted actively and forcefully, before we see them again in our skies and in our cities. And we set a goal: we will not allow the triumph of hatred and violence in the affairs of men.

….

In Iraq, a dictator is building and hiding weapons that could enable him to dominate the Middle East and intimidate the civilized world -- and we will not allow it. This same tyrant has close ties to terrorist organizations, and could supply them with the terrible means to strike this country -- and America will not permit it. The danger posed by Saddam Hussein and his weapons cannot be ignored or wished away. The danger must be confronted. We hope that the Iraqi regime will meet the demands of the United Nations and disarm, fully and peacefully. If it does not, we are prepared to disarm Iraq by force. Either way, this danger will be removed.

The safety of the American people depends on ending this direct and growing threat. Acting against the danger will also contribute greatly to the long-term safety and stability of our world. The current Iraqi regime has shown the power of tyranny to spread discord and violence in the Middle East. A liberated Iraq can show the power of freedom to transform that vital region, by bringing hope and progress into the lives of millions. America's interests in security, and America's belief in liberty, both lead in the same direction: to a free and peaceful Iraq.

 

The first to benefit from a free Iraq would be the Iraqi people, themselves. Today they live in scarcity and fear, under a dictator who has brought them nothing but war, and misery, and torture. Their lives and their freedom matter little to Saddam Hussein -- but Iraqi lives and freedom matter greatly to us.

Bringing stability and unity to a free Iraq will not be easy. Yet that is no excuse to leave the Iraqi regime's torture chambers and poison labs in operation. Any future the Iraqi people choose for themselves will be better than the nightmare world that Saddam Hussein has chosen for them.

If we must use force, the United States and our coalition stand ready to help the citizens of a liberated Iraq. We will deliver medicine to the sick, and we are now moving into place nearly 3 million emergency rations to feed the hungry.

.. The world has a clear interest in the spread of democratic values, because stable and free nations do not breed the ideologies of murder. They encourage the peaceful pursuit of a better life. And there are hopeful signs of a desire for freedom in the Middle East

... Success in Iraq could also begin a new stage for Middle Eastern peace, and set in motion progress towards a truly democratic Palestinian state. The passing of Saddam Hussein's regime will deprive terrorist networks of a wealthy patron that pays for terrorist training, and offers rewards to families of suicide bombers. And other regimes will be given a clear warning that support for terror will not be tolerated.

It's a more important weapon than a rifle, a tank, a bomber or a battleship. It's more destructive than an artillery shell or a bunker buster, or a Tomahawk missile. While those weapons are created and owned by this government, they are harmless without people willing to use them."

"And the ruling class, the billionaires who profit from human suffering care only about expending their wealth, controlling the world economy. Our enemy is not five thousands miles away, they are right here at home. If we organize and fight with our sisters and brothers we can stop this war, we can stop this government and we can create a better world"

On Democracy Now, Jon Michael Turner throws his medals and stars from his chest and said:

"I AM SORRY for the hate and destruction that I have inflicted on innocent people, and I’m sorry for the hate and destruction that others have inflicted on innocent people. At one point, it was OK. But reality has shown that it’s not and that this is happening and that until people hear about what is going on with this war, it will continue to happen and people will continue to die. I am sorry for the things that I did. I am no longer the monster that I once was. Thank you.”
